When to refer
Communication is essential in all areas of development. Children who struggle with speech, language and communication skills, find it more difficult to communicate effectively, build positive relationships and acquire the fundamental skills required to achieve academically.
Children are all unique and develop their speech & language skills at different rates. There are 'typical' ages by which we expect children to have developed certain skills. Some children may struggle to acquire speech, language and communication skills and require additional support for this.
At Hop Speak Jump, we will help determine how your child is developing and whether they will need some additional support with their speech, language and communication skills.
If you are unsure whether your child needs Speech & Language Therapy, please see the Ages & Stages Guidelines from Talking Point http://www.talkingpoint.org.uk/ages-and-stages
Parents can refer their child directly to Hop Speak Jump, no health visitor or GP referral necessary. Through our pre-assessment parent questionnaire, we aim to gather as much information as possible prior to the initial assessment means we can focus our attention on your child's areas of need. Any available feedback from nursery/school is welcomed to ensure a holistic view of your child's strengths and needs. Please complete the parent questionnaire below as appropriate to your child prior to the initial assessment to help us to direct the assessment to your child's areas of needs.
Following the initial assessment, parents can opt for verbal feedback, a short report, or a full report. If your child requires therapy, we will set goals together in line with the assessment findings and provide copies of goals and strategies to help you continue to support your child at home and in school.
We are happy to work in collaboration with other professionals working with your child including school staff, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Specialist Teachers, ABA Therapists and NHS Speech & Language Therapists.
